Mr. Notorious (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) topped Saturday night's Barretts Paddock Sale at Del Mar when he fetched $200,000 from Deron Pearson's D.P. Racing. The sale, which has been held since 2011, was moved to post-race Saturday for the first time this year. A total of 19 horses sold for a gross of $728,500, good for an average of $38,342. The median was $33,000, down from $42,000 last year. A total of 10 horses did not sell. Gross, average and median were down from last year, which saw 19 horses sell for a total of $2,147,000 for an average of $113,000 and a median of $42,000 in 2014.
Mr. Notorious, who sold as hip 14, was originally purchased by Teresa Marnane for $30,518 at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale and RNA'd for $5,601 at the Saint-Cloud May 2-Year-Old Breeze Up Sale. The sophomore was successful in his unveiling at Marseille-Borely June 19 (video) and was runner-up in an allowance there June 30 for trainer Matthieu Palussiere. McCarthy Bloodstock consigned Mr. Notorious on behalf of Con and Teresa Marnane. Mr. Notorious is the second foal out of the unraced Isola Tiberina (Hennessy), who is out of Trampoli (Trempolino), a graded stakes winner in France and Grade I stakes placed in the U.S. Mr. Notorious will go to trainer Jim Cassidy.
D.P. Racing has been active at the Del Mar Paddock Sale in recent years. In 2012, Pearson went to $510,000 to acquire then 3-year-old filly Oscar Party (Dixie Union), who subsequently finished second in the GII Indiana Oaks. Cassidy currently trains Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), winner of the GIII Senorita S. and GII San Clemente H., for D.P. Racing.
“He's very well made,” Cassidy explained. “There's nothing to really not like about him. It's just a matter of how much we wanted to pay for him. I probably didn't want to go that high, but we did and so be it.”
The conditioner said he would likely point Mr. Notorious towards the Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. Sept. 5.
D.P. Racing also purchased hip 9, a 2-year-old colt by Stormin Fever for $9,000 to become the sale's top buyer. McCarthy Bloodstock sold four other lots for a combined $324,000 for top consignment honors. The GSP My Monet (Decarchy) (hip 36), RNA'd for $275,000.
